White Hart Inn’s Golliwog Display Sparks Fiery Racism Row

The White Hart Inn in Greys, Essex, is in hot water over its display of controversial golliwog dolls. These toys, linked to old minstrel imagery, have long been slammed as racist caricatures.

CAMRA Cracks Down on Pub’s Golliwog Dolls

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has ordered its South Essex branch to take action against the pub for showcasing 30 golliwog dolls. The dolls were proudly displayed by Mrs Ryley for nearly a decade, but critics say they stoke harmful racial stereotypes.

Landlord Says It’s a ‘Molehill, Not a Mountain’

Pub landlord Mr Ryley fiercely defends the display, insisting the fuss is blown out of proportion. “A mountain has been made out of a molehill,” he said, defending the dolls as just a nostalgic nod to history.

Police Investigate Amid Political Backlash

Home Secretary Suella Braverman weighed in, telling the local police it’s their call on any action. So far, no arrests or charges have been made. The landlord is due to be questioned next month.

The police consulted with the Crown Prosecution Service before the dolls were removed. The items are linked to Robertson’s Jam, a once-beloved UK brand launched in 1910, famous for its “Golly” mascot. After years of criticism, the Golly was phased out in 2001, reflecting changing cultural sensitivities.
