Self-Isolation Extended to 10 Days for COVID-19 Cases
The UK has increased the self-isolation period to 10 days for anyone in the community showing COVID-19 symptoms or testing positive. This move aims to curb the spread of the virus as infections remain a threat.
When Is COVID-19 Most Infectious?
Coronavirus is most contagious just before and during the first few days of symptoms. That’s why health officials stress the importance of immediate self-isolation and getting a COVID-19 test for contact tracing.
New evidence shows that even those with mild symptoms can still spread the virus between 7 and 9 days after first feeling ill. So, sticking to the longer 10-day isolation helps reduce chances of passing on the bug.
Official Rationale Behind the Change
“We have considered how best to target interventions to reduce risk to the general population,” said the Chief Medical Officer. “With widespread, rapid testing and relaxation of other measures, extending isolation to 10 days strikes the right balance.”
This extension is especially important to protect vulnerable people who have been shielding and to prepare for potentially higher transmission during winter and the upcoming new wave.
