Massive London Rally Demands General Election and Wage Hikes
The People’s Assembly has rallied trade unions and community groups for a major demonstration across London today. They’re calling for a general election, better wages, and an end to “anti-union” labour laws.
Union Leaders and Activists Take to Trafalgar Square
Mick Lynch, the fiery General Secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union, fired up the crowd at Trafalgar Square. The Metropolitan Police confirmed multiple protests are underway, with stewards supporting officers on the ground. Extra police were deployed anticipating disruptions from environmental group Just Stop Oil.
Jeremy Corbyn and Families Join the Fight
“Governments eventually listen as a result of public movements. The people out here are tenacious,” said former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn during the rally.
Michelle Uden, 34, brought her seven-year-old twins from southeast London, desperate for change amid soaring living costs and caring for her epileptic husband. “Enough is enough,” she declared. “We’ll sit and cry if we don’t stand up and fight.” Michelle wants her children to witness “democracy in action.”
Organisers Demand Real Change and Unity
Ramona McCartney, national organiser for the People’s Assembly, slammed the government’s elite for choosing the third prime minister in months without public input. “We want to make this the largest demonstration to push for a general election and support striking workers,” she said.
Laura Pidcock, the Assembly’s national secretary, urged solidarity. “We must unite on the streets and in our towns to ensure our voices are heard and force major changes in how this country is run.”
