Quick-Thinking 999 Operators Save Trio from Nunhead Blaze
Three trapped residents were given crucial fire survival advice over the phone before firefighters rescued them from a fiery nightmare at a maisonette in Rye Hill Park, Nunhead.
Flames Block Escape Route
A fire damaged the front door of the mid-terraced maisonette and completely destroyed a wheelie bin outside. The blaze sealed off the only safe exit, forcing the trio to stay inside and call 999 for help.
Emergency control officers guided them through staying safe indoors until firefighters arrived and led them out.
Fire Brigade Issues Crucial Safety Warning
“Make sure items are fully extinguished before disposal,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson urged. “Always keep your exit routes clear so you can escape instantly in an emergency.”
“If you can’t use your usual escape, find a safe room deep inside your home, ideally with a window. Close the door, seal gaps with soft materials to block smoke, then call 999 and shout ‘HELP, FIRE.’ Stay on the line and follow instructions.”
Swift Response Contains Fire
Firefighters from New Cross, Peckham, Forest Hill, and Old Kent Road rushed to the scene after the alarm at 10:48pm. The fire was under control by 11:37pm. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
Investigators traced the fire to smouldering paper thrown into the wheelie bin before it had fully cooled – a stark reminder to put out waste properly and prevent deadly home fires.
