Tragic Blaze Claims Nine Lives at Disabled Holiday Home in France
A devastating fire tore through a holiday home for disabled adults in eastern France, killing nine people and leaving two more feared dead. The blaze struck the retreat in Wintzenheim, near the German border, early yesterday morning.
Fire Erupts at Dawn, Massive Rescue Effort Underway
The fire broke out around 6:30 AM, quickly engulfing the 500-square-metre building. Emergency services sprang into action, sending 76 firefighters, four fire engines, and four ambulances. Seventeen people were rescued, including one injured who was hospitalised. Sadly, 10 disabled adults and a staff member lost their lives.
Heartbreak in Nancy Community
The missing victims were from Nancy, a city two hours from the site. Local officials expressed their shock and grief. Haut-Rhin Préfecture praised the swift response despite the ferocity of the blaze.
“Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy,” said French President Emmanuel Macron.
Mathieu Klein, Mayor of Nancy, shared his sorrow on social media, highlighting the devastating impact on the disabled community.
Top Officials Rally as Investigation Begins
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne confirmed she will visit the site. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin gave a grim update, revealing much of the building was destroyed and multiple casualties are expected. Authorities are investigating the fire’s cause as the nation mourns.
