Horror on the Road: 17 Dead as Bus Plunges into Ravine in Mexico
Deadly Crash Shocks Nayarit
A horrific bus crash in western Mexico has claimed at least 17 lives. The passenger bus careened off a highway near Barranca Blanca, Nayarit state, and tumbled 50 metres into a deep ravine. Fourteen adults and three children died in the tragedy.
A further 22 passengers were injured but are in stable condition, local officials confirmed. The bus, part of the Elite passenger line, was carrying around 40 people en route to Tijuana when disaster struck.
Rescue Mission Hampered by Harsh Terrain
Rescue teams faced major challenges reaching victims due to the ravine’s depth. Jorge Benito Rodriguez, Nayarit’s security and civil protection secretary, called the rescue efforts “extremely difficult.” Ambulances lined the highway as civil protection units and firefighters worked tirelessly to evacuate passengers.
International Victims and Growing Safety Fears
Among those on board were six Indian citizens, adding an international twist to the unfolding tragedy. Authorities are investigating what caused the bus to veer off the road, with the exact reason still unknown.
This wreck marks the second major bus disaster in Mexico within two months. Last month, a bus crash in Oaxaca killed 29 people. In February, another crash involving migrants in central Mexico claimed 17 lives.
Calls for Tougher Safety Rules
The recent spate of deadly crashes has raised urgent calls for stronger safety measures and stricter transport regulations across Mexico. Transportation authorities are under intense pressure to improve passenger safety on the country’s roads.
