Tyre Ban Alert: No More Old Tyres on Lorry Front Axles from 2021
The government is cracking down on old tyres. From February 2021, it will be illegal to fit tyres aged 10 years or more on the front axles of lorries, buses, coaches, and certain minibuses.
What’s Changing?
- Tyres over 10 years old banned on front axle of goods vehicles over 3,500 kg
- Ban extends to front axles of buses and coaches, including minibuses
- Also applies to rear axle of minibuses with single rear wheels
- Tyres without a visible date code will also fail safety checks
Strict New Safety Checks at Annual Tests and on the Road
DVSA’s Vehicle Standards Assessors will now fail any vehicle at its annual test if old tyres are found in the banned positions. Tyres must clearly show a date of manufacture or retreading.
On the roadside, officers will hand out an ‘S’ mark prohibition notice if they spot illegal old tyres on front axles and will follow up with further investigations.
Driving Safer Roads Forward
The DVSA will update its official manuals to reflect the new rules before the ban kicks in. Meanwhile, assessors will help drivers get ready by flagging old tyres during inspections ahead of time.
“This new rule will help improve road safety and follows work undertaken by government and the determined efforts of campaigners.”
Keep your wheels safe and legal. The crackdown on ageing tyres is designed to keep British roads safer for everyone.
