UK Braces for Thunderstorm Deluge After Scorching Heatwave
Yellow Weather Warning Issued
The UK’s blistering heatwave is about to end with a bang. The Met Office has slapped a yellow thunderstorm warning across a huge stretch of England – from Devon up to County Durham – and parts of Wales, including Cardiff and Newport. Storms hitting on Thursday could dump the equivalent of a whole month’s rainfall in just one day.
Heavy Rain Could Cause Serious Flooding
Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey warned: “These are particularly heavy downpours. Some isolated areas should expect between 70mm and 90mm an hour, a lot of rain in a short space of time on Thursday.” This intense deluge, common in summer showers, contrasts with the steady rain usually seen in winter.
To put it in perspective, England averages 75mm of rain in August, while Wales gets about 112mm. The approaching storms could unleash more than half of this month’s typical rainfall on parts of mid-Wales in a single day, raising serious flood risks.
Heatwave Ends with a Stormy Twist
The soggy showdown comes after temperatures soared into the 30s Celsius on Tuesday, signalling the end of the current mini heatwave. The sudden switch will spike dangers for flood-hit communities and could disrupt travel and power supplies.
