More than 200,000 migrants have crossed the Channel to reach the UK since 2018, with dozens arriving in Dover, Kent, on Friday morning, pushing the total past this major milestone. Analysis of government data shows 199,943 arrivals as of May 7, with official Home Office figures expected to confirm the number shortly.

Rising Channel Arrivals

The number of Channel migrants has climbed sharply over the years, starting from just 299 arrivals in 2018 to a peak of 45,774 in 2022. Although numbers fell to 29,437 in 2023, they have since risen again with 36,816 recorded in 2024 and 41,472 in 2025. The average number of migrants per boat has also dramatically increased, reaching 64 per crossing so far in 2026.

Government Response

The Home Office states the government is intensifying efforts against small boat crossings. A new landmark deal with France aims to enhance beach patrols and increase enforcement, helping to stop more than 42,000 illegal crossings since the last election. Political Fallout

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticised the current immigration system as “totally broken,” accusing Labour of failing to remove illegal immigrants and warning about serious crimes committed by some migrants. Meanwhile, successive governments have tried to revise asylum rules and collaborate with France to deter dangerous Channel crossings.

Channel Fatalities

There is no official UK record on Channel crossing fatalities, but available data suggests 2024 was the deadliest year with 50 deaths reported by the French coastguard. At least 17 deaths were recorded in 2025. The first known migrant fatality during a crossing attempt was a 31-year-old Iranian woman in 2019.

Recent Developments

Last month, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a £662 million, three-year deal with France to boost beach patrols. However, the Labour government has scrapped the Conservative plan to send Channel-crossing migrants to Rwanda, a policy now subject to a legal dispute with Rwanda seeking compensation.
