UK Set for Mini Heatwave with 27°C Temps!

Brits can ditch their coats soon, as a “mini heatwave” is about to hit the UK. Forecasters warn the mercury could soar to the warmest highs of the year so far, with temperatures hitting 25°C to 27°C from early next week.

When Will the Heatwave Kick In?

Starting Saturday (April 26), temps will climb to between 13°C and 17°C. Western UK might see some light rain, but the east will stay mostly dry with a few clouds. By Sunday (April 27), high pressure will push in over England and Wales, clearing skies just in time for the London and Manchester marathons.

Temperatures to Peak Midweek

Darren Bett, BBC’s lead weather presenter, says south-easterly winds will sweep up warmer air from continental Europe. “Temperatures will climb widely to 22-23°C and it will feel very pleasant in the sunshine,” he said. “In the Midlands and south-east England, temperatures are forecast to reach 25-27°C by Wednesday (April 30).

While not record-breaking, these highs are well above average for April. The UK’s hottest April day ever recorded was 29.4°C in London on 16 April 1949. The last time April hit 27°C was back in 2018 in Cambridge.

How Long Will the Heat Last?

The mini heatwave should stick around until at least the end of next week. A “blocked” weather pattern – with high pressure to the east and low pressure to the west – is funneling warm European air into the UK. But Bett warns the setup could shift by next weekend, cooling northern areas and bringing showers south.

“This is still some way off and may change,” Bett added.

Sun Safety Tips

With the sun set to shine, Brits are urged to take care:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Apply sun cream regularly
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure during peak UV hours
  • Keep homes cool by shutting blinds during the hottest parts of the day
