Riot Police Storm Harmondsworth Detention Centre After Massive 100-Strong Disturbance
Chaos erupted just after 3am on Saturday 5th November 2022 at Harmondsworth detention centre near Heathrow. Over 100 detainees sparked a major disturbance, forcing the Met Police’s elite Territorial Support Group (TSG) and multiple emergency services into action.
Knives, Wood & Power Cut Spark Mayhem
Fire crews from across London joined riot officers and armed police after reports that inmates armed themselves with knives and lumps of wood. Power and water failed in affected areas. A specialist engineer was called in to fix the outage. Staff had to be evacuated after being threatened with violence.
The unrest followed several fires set throughout Friday evening, which centre staff struggled to control.
Detainees Break Into Courtyard, Police Call In Air Support
The large group broke out of their units and gained access to the detention centre’s courtyard. Essex’s National Police air support helicopter was scrambled to relay live footage to senior officers coordinating efforts to restore order.
The TSG, a force of highly trained officers who handle high-risk incidents 24/7, took the lead. They specialise in public order, prison disturbances, building searches, and critical incidents, with some authorised to carry firearms.
Official Response & Ongoing Situation
Several police vans remain on site and around the perimeter. At this stage, it’s unclear if there were any injuries or the full extent of damage caused.
Home Office spokesperson: “There has been a power outage at Harmondsworth immigration removal centre, and work is currently underway to resolve this issue. The welfare and safety of staff and individuals detained at Harmondsworth is our key priority.”
“We are aware of a disturbance at the centre and the appropriate authorities have been notified and are on scene.”
The Met Police and Home Office have been approached for further comment as the tense situation unfolds.
