HMS Queen Elizabeth Makes Triumphant Return to Portsmouth
Portsmouth was buzzing on Wednesday, 16th August 2017, as crowds gathered at dawn to catch a rare sight – the £3 billion HMS Queen Elizabeth sailing into her home dock. This mammoth aircraft carrier, the pride of the Royal Navy, made a grand entrance into Portsmouth Harbour.
Historic Homecoming Draws Early Risers
Fans and locals lined the waterfront from the early morning, desperate to witness history in the making. The arrival was no ordinary docking – it was marked by a dazzling flypast. Fleet Air Arm’s Merlin and Wildcat helicopters soared overhead, accompanied by the sleek Hawk jets of 736 NAS from Culdrose, putting on a show fit for royalty.
Guided in by Six Tugs, Ready for Duty
Six powerful tugboats manoeuvred the 65,000-tonne vessel expertly, helping her navigate through the harbour and settle into her berth at the naval base. Once HMS Queen Elizabeth passed Outer Spit Buoy, the ship was committed to docking, signalling the end of her latest sea trials.
Britain’s Biggest Warship Begins New Era
Arriving just after 7.10am, a day ahead of schedule due to unpredictable conditions, the HMS Queen Elizabeth is now officially home. This colossal ship is the largest warship ever built in Britain and is set to be the Royal Navy’s flagship for at least the next 50 years.
The return of this naval giant marks the start of a new chapter in British maritime power – and Portsmouth couldn’t be prouder.
