Thousands of UK and Commonwealth veterans and civilian staff who took part in the nuclear deterrent testing programme in the 1950s and 60s can now claim a commemorative medal. - Also honours scientists, local workers, and close Commonwealth partners from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Kiribati
Government Hails Veterans’ Service
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer said: “This important step moves us closer to recognising the 1 of those civilians and veterans who played a critical role in establishing the UK’s nuclear deterrent and contributing to our enduring international security. I strongly encourage all eligible veterans and civilian staff to apply for the award and wear their medals with pride.”
Defence Secretary Ben Wallace added: “Nuclear Test Veterans have made an invaluable contribution to the safety and security of the UK. It’s right that we recognise and value their enduring service to our nation.”
Funding Boost to Preserve Veterans’ Stories
The government has also committed £450,000 to projects honouring nuclear test veterans, especially those deployed to Australia and the Pacific. This includes a new oral history project launching April 2023 that will record veterans’ first-hand accounts. The two-year project aims to create a digital archive preserving their experiences for future generations.
Additionally, a £200,000 fund launched in February 2023 will back community projects supporting nuclear test veterans and families, raising public awareness and creating lasting memorials.
If you or your family served in the UK Nuclear Test Programme, don’t miss out on your chance to claim this historic medal. It’s free, honours your sacrifice, and finally gives proper recognition to decades of dedicated service.
