London rocked by fierce protests: Trafalgar and Waterloo clashes in one explosive afternoon
Massive police action as thousands descend on capital
London was on high alert this Saturday, 13 June, as thousands poured into the city to protest. The Metropolitan Police launched a major operation to keep order amid the chaos.
Ahead of the rallies, cops enforced strict safety rules and employed a section 60 order after intelligence revealed some protesters were armed.
Violence breaks out, arrests mount
While many protesters complied with police demands, there were violent flare-ups targeting officers. By 5pm, five individuals were arrested for offences ranging from violent disorder, assault on police, possession of offensive weapons, class A drugs, and drunk and disorderly conduct.
All detainees remain in custody at a central London police station. Six officers suffered minor injuries in the disorder.
Commander Bas Javid delivers stark warning
“Thousands have travelled to London despite being asked not to. Some came intent on causing harm,” said Commander Bas Javid.
“We understand why people want to express their concerns and have worked hard to keep everyone safe. Many complied and behaved responsibly. But a number put officers and the public at risk with unacceptable violence, which I condemn.”
“From 5pm today, all protests must end. We will use all necessary tactics to disperse anyone who remains, including arrests. To those still in central London, my message is simple: go home.”
