Met Warns: No Protests Allowed Amid Covid Rules
Protesting in groups of more than two is *officially* illegal under current government Covid-19 laws. There are no exceptions for protests. The Met is clear: your right to protest has to take a back seat to public health.
Public Health Over Protests
The police are urging Londoners to steer clear of central London to stop mass gatherings. Large crowds risk spreading the deadly virus that has already claimed thousands of lives.
A heavy police presence will be on duty all day. Officers will engage with anyone breaking the rules. If ordered to disperse, protesters must go home. If they refuse, they face fines or even arrest.
Met Deputy Assistant Commissioner Speaks Out
“The Met is committed to working with groups who wish to assemble, but these are not normal times,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor.
“Recent weeks have seen high Covid rates and many hospitalisations. The health risk is real and we must all act to prevent the virus spreading.
“Those who gather are putting Londoners’ health in danger. We have plans to disperse crowds and take enforcement action where needed – not just organisers but participants too.
“Everyone knows their role in stopping the virus spread. Thousands have sacrificed for over a year – we don’t want to be forced to enforce, but officers need to focus on local policing.
“I urge everyone to think twice before joining protests and stay home.”
