Police on High Alert Ahead of Good Friday Anniversary Amid Terror Threats
Chief Constable Simon Byrne has warned that recent unrest in Northern Ireland could be a deadly trap designed to lure officers into gun or bomb attacks. This chilling alert comes after MI5 bumped up the region’s terrorism threat to severe in February 2023, signalling a high risk of attack.
25 Years Since Good Friday – Tensions Run High
The 25th anniversary of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement – which ended three decades of deadly Troubles claiming over 3,500 lives – is being marked with major events. To brace for potential violence, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has reshuffled shifts to flood frontline duties with more officers.
PSNI Under Siege After Attempted Murder of Detective
Senior detective John Caldwell remains seriously injured after being shot multiple times at an Omagh sports complex. The attack is suspected to have been carried out by the New IRA, a dissident republican group.
Assistant Chief Constable Bobby Singleton revealed:
“We have very strong community intelligence that attacks are being planned in Londonderry. Officers must be ready, and we will be prepared for all eventualities this Monday.”
Top Political Figures Condemn Potential Attacks
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin blasted any attack on police as “criminality in its worst form”, labelling those who plan such violence “very evil people.”
The security strain is also swelling with the imminent visit of US President Joe Biden, who will attend the anniversary events. Combined, the celebrations and the presidential visit are projected to cost a hefty £7 million in security operations.
Massive Surveillance Operation Underway
The PSNI has set up a dedicated CCTV viewing hub as part of their probe into the attempt on Detective Caldwell’s life. Thirty detectives are combing through over 100,000 hours of footage to nail the culprits.
More Violence Brewing: Loyalist Feuds Add to Chaos
Beyond dissident republican threats, the PSNI faces ongoing turmoil from violent feuds between criminal drug gangs linked to loyalist factions, ramping up the risk of street warfare ahead of the sensitive anniversary.
