Ex-Brit Embassy Guard Faces Spying Charges for Feeding Secrets to Russia
British Security Guard Arrested in Spy Scandal
David Ballantyne Smith, 57, a Brit living in Potsdam, Germany, is in hot water. He’s been slapped with nine charges under the Official Secrets Act 1911. The alleged offences date back to between October 2020 and August 2021.
Extradited Back to UK
Smith worked as a security guard at the British Embassy in Berlin. German cops arrested him on 10 August 2021, and he was extradited to the UK on 6 April. He’s set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 7 April.
Spilling Secrets to Russia
The charges claim Smith collected and passed on sensitive info useful to the Russian state. The UK government is taking this seriously, given the nature of the alleged espionage.
