Eight fire crews called to tackle Ship fire in Southampton

Hampshire fire and rescue have confirmed that they have sent eight fire appliances to tackle a ship fire in Southampton. Fire crews from Redbridge, St Marys, Hightown,Romsey, Gosport, Eastleigh, Lyndhurst, Hardley, Beaulieu and Bishops Waltham have been mobilised to the incident. The fire is understood to have broken out in a cargo hold of a ship containing scrap metal. An investigation has been launched into how the fire started. In the haul of the ship. That is currently docked in Western Docks in Southampton. More than 60 firefighters and officers remain at the fire involving more than 7,000 tonnes of scrap metal. Hampshire Fire and Rescue said :”That the blaze broke out on a cargo ship, which is carrying around 28,000 tonnes of scrap metal, at 2.51pm. We have sent six fire appliances and support vehicles to prevent the flames spreading. Residents living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors shut due to the amount of smoke.
