Dame Stella Rimington, MI5’s First Female Boss, Dies Aged 90
Trailblazing Spy Legend Passes Away
Dame Stella Rimington, the first woman to head MI5 and said to be the real-life inspiration behind Dame Judi Dench’s iconic ‘M’ in the James Bond films, has died aged 90. Her family confirmed she passed peacefully on the evening of 3 August, surrounded by loved ones and her cherished dogs.
“She died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs,” the family said in a heartfelt statement.
From Diplomat’s Wife to MI5 Chief
Married in 1963, Stella moved to New Delhi in 1965 following her husband John’s diplomatic posting. While assisting at the British High Commission, she caught MI5’s eye and joined their India office, sparking a stellar intelligence career that lasted nearly 30 years.
Back in the UK by 1969, Dame Stella officially joined MI5. She worked across all sections: counter-espionage, counter-subversion, and counter-terrorism. In 1992, she smashed the glass ceiling, becoming MI5’s first female Director General.
Her services were honoured with a Dame Commander of the Order of the Bath (DCB) in the 1996 New Year Honours, shortly after retiring.
From Spy to Bestseller
After leaving MI5, Dame Stella didn’t slow down. She took board roles at giants like Marks & Spencer and BG Group. She also penned the popular Liz Carlyle spy thrillers, bringing her secret service experience to the page.
Her death was first reported by Sky News, highlighting her groundbreaking work and enduring influence on the public’s view of MI5.
Her literary agents said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dame Stella Rimington, the first female Director General of MI5 and author.”
A Legend Remembered
Tributes have flooded in from all corners. An MI5 spokesperson called her “a role model for generations of intelligence officers,” praising her courage, clarity, and quiet determination.
“She led MI5 through unprecedented public scrutiny and paved the way for a more transparent, accountable Security Service,” they added.
Dame Stella Rimington leaves behind a massive legacy — reshaping MI5, inspiring future spies, and influencing global pop culture.
