Christmas Turkey Fiasco: Rotting Birds Spark Outrage Across UK Supermarkets
Just hours before Christmas Day, festive cheer turned to fury as shoppers nationwide discovered their supermarket turkeys had gone rotten. The crisis has hit big names like Asda, Aldi, Tesco, and Sainsbury’s, leaving shoppers fuming and scrambling for a Plan B.
Shoppers Slam ‘Rancid’ and ‘Slimy’ Turkeys
Social media was ablaze with angry posts and shocking images of spoiled poultry. One shopper vented their frustration after buying a discounted turkey from Asda, saying:
“Asda, Christmas Day officially ruined. Purchased this earlier, and it’s rotten. It smells disgusting. It’s shocking how you can sell something rotten and then leave people worried about where they are going to eat another turkey with limited time left.”
Their turkey showed grey, discoloured flesh despite a best-before date of Boxing Day. The bird had been slashed from £23.60 to £15.81 in a bid to clear stock.
Aldi wasn’t spared either. One customer tweeted, “@AldiUK Loving your turkey crown, which is rotten two days before its use-by date.” They paid £13.60 for the blemished bird due December 26.
Another Aldi shopper added:
“Christmas ruined, thanks for the rotten turkey. Research tells me that a fresh raw turkey only lasts two days, so why are you selling them on the 19th with a best-before date on the 28th? Looks like we are having chicken on Christmas day.”
Tesco and Sainsbury’s Also Under Fire
A disappointed Tesco customer who splashed out £53 on a ‘fresh’ turkey was left gutted after unwrapping a putrid mess:
“This is a bit of a blow. Bought a ‘fresh’ turkey from the local Tesco superstore a couple of days ago. Just unwrapped it to prepare everything for tomorrow, and it stinks. The meat is rotten. So… Christmas dinner? It’ll not be quite as we might’ve hoped.”
Sainsbury’s faced a backlash too. One shopper said, “Just went to prep the turkey crown for tomorrow, and it’s rotten!!! Cheers Sainsbury’s.” Another added, “Just checked my turkey I bought on the 20th (dated for the 27th!) and it is rancid and slimy! Nearly threw up from the smell! Disgusting!”
Technical Glitch Adds to Christmas Woes
The festive fiasco didn’t stop at poultry. Shoppers also fumed over a technical fault preventing the redemption of Nectar points, Sainsbury’s loyalty rewards. Many rely on Nectar points to ease the cost of Christmas shopping, but the glitch left some out-of-pocket and stressed during the busiest shopping season.
Sainsbury’s has promised to fix the issue and is actively working to support affected customers.
