Hampshire Firefighter Joins UK Rescue Mission in Malawi After Deadly Cyclone
Daryll Pynigar, a watch manager from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue, is part of the UK International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) team deployed to cyclone-ravaged Malawi. The 27-strong squad, made up of top firefighters from 14 UK fire services, is helping save lives after Cyclone Freddy tore through the country last week.
Devastation in Malawi: Over 300 Dead, Thousands Displaced
Cyclone Freddy struck Malawi on 12 March, killing more than 300 people and leaving tens of thousands homeless. The UKISAR team is working alongside local authorities to hunt for survivors using specialist rescue gear, which will also be donated to Malawi for future emergencies.
UKISAR to Provide Shelter and Safe Water for Thousands
- Emergency shelter for around 3,600 people
- Access to safe drinking water for thousands more
- Fully self-sufficient operation – UKISAR brings its own food, water, shelter, sanitation, communications, and rescue equipment for up to 14 days
This approach prevents adding pressure on Malawi’s strained resources in the wake of the disaster.
Experienced Firefighter Leads Search and Rescue Effort
Daryll, based in Bishop’s Waltham, will lead the Base of Operations on the ground. With 30 years’ disaster response experience, he is no stranger to international rescue efforts. Last year, he helped deliver vital aid to Ukraine. The UKISAR team has been praised for its swift action in recent crises, including responses to the Turkey earthquake and Jersey building collapse.
Group Manager Phil Foxton said:
“As with all our Urban Search and Rescue firefighters who volunteer for UKISAR, Daryll is well-equipped to handle situations like this.
We’re proud to see him involved in the UK’s response to the devastating cyclone in Malawi.
We’re lucky to have firefighters ready to save lives worldwide.
Our USAR and ISAR teams have been commended for their recent efforts in Jersey and Turkey.”
