Kent Welcomes 1,151 Ukrainians with Open Arms
Kent has matched 1,151 Ukrainians with sponsors in 707 homes, according to the latest Government data. These arrivals are part of the Homes for Ukraine scheme, where local residents have signed up to provide shelter and safety.
Support and Safety Measures in Place
Kent County Council (KCC) is on full alert to support both newcomers and their hosts. The council offers help to access vital services like 1, healthcare, benefits, English classes, plus interpreting and translation where needed.
All sponsors undergo mandatory DBS checks, with enhanced DBS screenings for hosts taking in Ukrainian children. Accommodation must meet strict safety standards, with local councils conducting thorough housing inspections.
Community and Council Join Forces
Government funding backs councils to deliver this crucial support. Kent’s Resilience Forum partners are fully mobilised to meet the ongoing needs of Ukrainian arrivals. Meanwhile, charities and volunteers across the county are stepping up to help refugees settle in their new communities.
Kent Leader Praises Local Generosity
“Kent is ready to help as many refugees as possible,” said Kent County Council leader Roger Gough. “It’s been truly heartening to see so many residents step forward through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, offering safety and shelter to traumatised families escaping terrible atrocities in Ukraine.
“Together with central government, we’re committed to making sure everyone arriving in Kent receives the care and support they need for as long as they stay.”
