Knife Horror: Mohammed Umar Khan Named in Shocking School Murder
The 15-year-old boy who stabbed his classmate to death during lunch has finally been named. Mohammed Umar Khan, a pupil at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield, was found guilty of murdering fellow 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose.
Reporting Ban Lifted: Public Finally Knows The Killer’s Name
Until now, Khan’s identity was kept secret under a court order and he was only known as “Umar” throughout the trial. But Mrs Justice Ellenbogen has lifted the reporting restrictions to shed full light on this tragic case.
“This was a serious crime carried out by one pupil against another on school property with a knife that was brought into school and was witnessed to varying degrees by other pupils and teachers. The public will wish to know the identity of those who commit serious offences in seeking to understand how a child of that age could do so.” – Mrs Justice Ellenbogen
Knife Crime Debate Reignited
Media groups fought hard to have the ban lifted, saying naming Khan would raise awareness and could help prevent similar knife attacks. The case has once more highlighted concerns about school safety and youth knife crime across the UK.
Sheffield Boy Faces Sentencing Today
Born and raised in Sheffield, Khan was in the same year group as his victim and educated locally all his life. He is due to be sentenced today for the murder that has left the community reeling.
