Gold Laundering Scam Alert: Russian Sanctioned Bullion Fleecing UK Market
The National Crime Agency (NCA) has issued a stark warning. Criminal gangs are laundering Russian gold to dodge sanctions, slyly slipping the precious metal into UK and global markets. They’re scrubbing the gold’s origin clean to fool buyers and regulators alike.
Russian Gold Fuels War Machine
Gold is a cash cow for Russia’s war efforts, raking in a staggering £12.6 billion in 2021. It’s only second to oil and gas in income. To choke this funding, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has slapped sanctions on key players in Russia’s gold trade.
Dirty Gold Disguised, Sold Worldwide
Since July 21, 2022, the NCA spotted surging Russian gold exports to countries ignoring sanctions. When melted down, recast, or refined, gold loses all identifiable marks. This cloak-and-dagger move scrubs its Russian origin, making it easy to pass off as legit anywhere.
UK Sector Joins Fight Against Gold Laundering
Adrian Searle, Director at NCA’s National Economic Crime Centre, slammed these dodgy schemes. “Sanctions evasion threatens UK security and global peace,” he said. He hailed London’s precious metals market for setting tough standards and improving trade supervision to stop the crooks.
The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) is front and centre, accrediting refineries that refine up to 92% of the world’s mined gold. Their “London Good Delivery” standard is key to keeping gold clean.
The NCA’s warning targets banks, high-value dealers, and lawyers, urging them to be vigilant. Together, they’re key to blocking sanctioned gold from sliding into UK hands and undermining sanctions.
