Kent Boosts Pay for Ukraine Hosts Amid Cost Crisis
Kent County Council (KCC) is upping the ante for hosts providing homes to Ukrainian refugees. While the Government offers a flat £350 per accommodation, KCC is increasing payments to help with soaring energy bills, food prices, and inflation.
Winter Worries Spark Payment Hike
Concerns grew that many hosts wouldn’t afford to extend their six-month hosting agreements as winter and the cost-of-living crunch loom. So, from late October until March 2023, KCC will boost monthly “thank you” payments to current and new hosts who pass the necessary checks.
There’s also a hardship fund for hosts struggling financially but determined to keep sheltering Ukrainian guests. Plus, those who host past six months will snag a £500 bonus in March 2023 as a nod to their incredible support.
Kent Leads UK in Ukraine Hosting
Kent tops the UK charts with 1,642 hosts matched to 3,871 people. So far, 2,927 Ukrainians have arrived, with 944 more expected, averaging 2-3 new arrivals daily.
“The response from Kent residents to the plight of the Ukrainian people fleeing their homes has been incredible,” said Kent County Council leader Roger Gough.
“Increasing payments is right and fair, recognising the huge role hosts have played. We hope this helps during tough financial times and encourages more to open their doors. We desperately need more hosts as arrivals continue.”
More Guests, More Cash
Many hosts support multiple guests. KCC’s scheme boosts payments based on household size:
- 1 person – £50 extra per month
- 2 people – £150 extra per month
- 3 people – £250 extra per month
- 4 people – £350 extra per month
- 5 people – £450 extra per month
- 6 people – £550 extra per month
- 7+ people – £650 extra per month
Support workers will keep visiting hosts through winter to ensure smooth stays and offer help as needed.
