UK Makes Historic Move, Recognises Palestine
In a bold and historic announcement, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed that the UK officially recognises the State of Palestine. Sharing the news in a video on X, Starmer called it a move to “revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis” and push for a two-state solution. This comes just days ahead of the United Nations General Assembly and follows similar recognitions by Australia and Canada. The timing is no coincidence.
Symbolic Gesture, But Real Impact Still Unclear
Whitehall insiders admit recognising Palestine won’t solve Gaza’s humanitarian nightmare or free hostages held by Hamas overnight. Yet Starmer insists the decision is vital to safeguarding the future of a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine.” – Keir Starmer, 21 September 2025
London Mayor Sadiq Khan Backs Starmer’s Tough Stand
London Mayor Sadiq Khan threw his full support behind Starmer’s landmark move. Speaking to the PA news agency, Khan said:
“It’s really important this happens. It sends a clear message to the Israeli government, who have been acting outrageously in recent years. It signals support for the two-state solution – something made difficult by the Israeli government’s behaviour in Gaza. Recognition boosts other countries’ confidence to follow suit.”
Khan also emphasised the symbolic impact for Palestinians in Gaza, saying it shows they “aren’t suffering in silence” and “haven’t been forgotten.” He labelled the situation in Gaza as “inescapable genocide.”
Netanyahu Slams UK Move as ‘Absurd’ and ‘Dangerous’
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded sharply to the UK’s decision. His spokeswoman, Shosh Bedrosian, called it “absurd” and “a reward for terrorism.” She claimed Hamas aims to erase Israel entirely, not share the land. Bedrosian insisted Starmer’s stance changes nothing about Hamas’s violent grip on Gaza or the ongoing hostage crisis.
“The people of Israel won’t commit suicide to satisfy European political needs.”
Starmer Draws Hard Line on Hamas Terror
Starmer fired back, condemning Hamas as a “brutal terror organisation.” He confirmed plans to ramp up sanctions against the group. “Our call for a genuine two-state solution is the exact opposite of their hateful vision,” he said. The Prime Minister is walking a tightrope, trying to balance support for Israel’s security while recognising Palestinian statehood.
With this controversial step, Britain boldly steps into the Middle East peace arena—but the path to a lasting peace deal looks tougher than ever.
