Seven Essex Drug Raids Net Nine Arrests in Massive Crackdown
At dawn yesterday, police swooped on seven locations across Essex, smashing drug rings in Grays, Wickford, Brentwood, and Canvey Island. The 6.30am raids were part of a major probe into the illegal drug trade gripping the area.
Nine Arrested, Six Charged
The raids resulted in nine arrests. Officers seized a large stash of cash—running into five figures—along with a cannabis grow operation and associated equipment. Six men now face charges.
Four of the accused are set for a Basildon Magistrates’ Court showdown today (Thursday 8 October), charged with conspiring to supply Class A drugs. They are:
- Russell Hands, 43, of The Chase, Wickford
- Michael Read, 53, of Crouch Road, Grays
- Mark Scarborough, 34, of Adams Glade, Rochford
- Mark Gooch, 37, of Sandringham Road, Pilgrims Hatch
Two others, Conrad Deprose, 28, from Alicia Avenue, Wickford, and Jeremy Goldner, 53, of Northolm, Edgware, face the same charge and will appear in court later this year.
Further Details on Suspects and Investigation
A 44-year-old woman from Canvey Island has been released on bail until 2 November, while a 19-year-old man from Pilgrims Hatch remains under investigation. One man, aged 53, was taken to hospital following his arrest and remains in care.
Operation Linked to Global Encryption Crackdown
This bust links back to Operation Venetic, a huge international law enforcement effort that cracked the encrypted communication network EncroChat. Used by around 60,000 criminals globally—including 10,000 in the UK—EncroChat was a secure mobile messaging platform pivotal for planning crimes, distributing drugs, and laundering money.
Since 2016, agencies across Europe worked to infiltrate such encrypted networks. Earlier this year, police in France and the Netherlands successfully hacked EncroChat, sharing critical intelligence through Europol to national forces, leading to this coordinated Essex crackdown.
