UK Opens Doors to Thousands of At-Risk Afghans
The UK is launching one of its most generous resettlement schemes ever, welcoming thousands of Afghan women, children, and vulnerable individuals fleeing Taliban persecution. Those forced to leave their homeland due to threats or violence will get the chance to permanently rebuild their lives on British soil.
5000 Afghans to Arrive in Year One—Women and Minorities First
The government aims to resettle 5,000 Afghan nationals at risk within the first year of the new Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme. Priority goes to women, girls, and religious minorities facing the worst abuses under Taliban rule.
This program could grow to take in up to 20,000 people over coming years. Officials acknowledge challenges but promise to push ahead at pace, working closely with devolved administrations and local councils to deliver vital support for new arrivals.
Backing from Allies and a Humanitarian Push
The UK is collaborating with global partners to identify the most vulnerable Afghans for resettlement. The Prime Minister plans to raise this during an upcoming G7 virtual summit.
This scheme adds to the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), which prioritises relocation of former Afghan staff who face serious threats. Around 5,000 staff and family members are expected to arrive by year-end under ARAP.
Government Acts Fast Amid Crisis
Since Saturday, 520 British nationals, diplomats, and former Afghan staff have flown out on UK military flights. The Prime Minister will update Parliament on efforts to evacuate vulnerable people and call for urgent international humanitarian aid to prevent catastrophe.
Home Secretary Priti Patel led an emergency meeting with officials from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the US, focusing on opening safe and legal routes for Afghan refugees.
“We owe a debt of gratitude to all those who have worked with us to make Afghanistan a better place over the last twenty years,” said Prime Minister Boris Johnson. “Many, especially women, now urgently need our help. I’m proud the UK has established this route for them to live safely here.”
Home Secretary Priti Patel added: “The UK government will always stand by those fleeing persecution or oppression. We won’t abandon people living in terror. This new resettlement scheme will save lives.”
Security Assured Amid Rapid Resettlement
The government stresses that strict security checks will apply to all arrivals, ensuring no compromise on national safety. This fresh initiative reflects the government’s New Plan for Immigration, aiming to create a fairer, more humane asylum system.
Thousands of Afghans already have asylum in the UK, with many more contributing through work and study under the Points-Based Immigration system.
This bold move marks the UK’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable as Afghanistan faces a perilous future.
