Syrian Uprising Anniversary: West Slams Assad Regime Amid Ongoing Crisis
France, Germany, the UK, and the US have slammed Bashar al-Assad’s regime on the 12th anniversary of the Syrian uprising. Their joint statement marks 13 years since Syrians demanded freedom and dignity—and paid a horrific price for it.
Quarter of a Million Civilians Killed, Assad Held Responsible
“Almost 250,000 Syrian civilians have been killed, the vast majority by the Assad regime,” the statement blasts. What began as peaceful protests was crushed with brutal atrocities that still continue today.
The unresolved conflict has unleashed a lawless theatre exploited by terrorists and drug traffickers, seriously undermining regional stability.
Earthquake Devastation Adds to Syria’s Woes
This grim anniversary comes on the heels of twin earthquakes that killed nearly 10,000 Syrians and Turks—many of whom had fled Assad’s terror.
In response, the West has eased sanctions to allow emergency humanitarian aid to flood earthquake-hit areas, while blocking the regime from pocketing funds at the Syrian people’s expense.
Calls for Accountability and Political Solution
The coalition demands all parties honour ceasefires and allow unfettered aid access through UN mechanisms. They also pressure for progress on a UN-backed, Syrian-led peace process under Security Council Resolution 2254.
The statement continues, “We will not normalise relations with Assad or fund reconstruction until authentic, lasting political change happens.
“The international community must hold Assad and other perpetrators accountable for their atrocities. Over 155,000 Syrians remain detained or missing. Efforts by national courts to prosecute crimes in Syria must be supported.”
As violence continues to wreck lives, the West stands firm with the Syrian people—demanding justice, aid, and an end to Assad’s reign of terror.
