Emergency Services Love Story: Firefighter and Paramedic Find Romance on the Frontline
When Martin and Lauren met while driving ambulances for South West Ambulance Service (SWASfT), little did they know their shared mission to save lives during the Covid-19 crisis would spark something truly special.
Love Ignites Amidst Ambulance Sirens
The couple crossed paths at the end of June in Shepton Mallet during a joint initiative between Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and other regional fire teams. Working overtime, Lauren spotted Martin meticulously checking an ambulance and thought, “He’s keen!”
“There was something very special about Lauren,” Martin said. “I admire everyone in the NHS for their care and commitment, but I knew immediately she was one in a million. We hit it off straight away and became good friends.”
Lauren calls herself the straight-talker of the pair, with Martin charming his way through every challenge.
Fire Meets Ambulance: A Perfect Partnership
Martin, a firefighter who volunteered to help ambulance crews in April, praised the vital collaboration between fire and ambulance teams.
“Firefighters know how to handle emergency driving — that skill translates perfectly to ambulance work,” Lauren explained. “This partnership has kept ambulance cover strong during the pandemic, making a huge difference for patient care.”
Martin added, “I joined the fire service to make a difference. Working with SWASfT has given me a new perspective and allowed me to do a job I truly believe in. Plus, I met Lauren — I’m the lucky one.”
From Long Shifts to a Happy Home: Engagement Sparks Hope
Despite unpredictable hours and missed dinners, the couple thrive by supporting each other both on and off duty.
“You can never plan anything,” Lauren chuckled. “But helping people makes it all worthwhile.”
Martin said, “As emergency workers, we’re practical and unshaken. Our combined skills help not only patients but also our relationship.”
Martin popped the question on one knee beneath festive Christmas lights in a heartfelt surprise. Now, the couple is preparing to move into a new home by the end of March. Alongside their two cats, Sam and Lola, and dog, Henry, they’re ready to build an emergency services family.
