Speeding Driver Kills Young Man in Fatal A27 Crash
Ruan Soares, 27, from Bognor Regis, has been jailed after a deadly high-speed crash on the A27. He pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving at Portsmouth Crown Court on 26 March.
Death on A27: Car Hits Tree at Over 100mph
The horror unfolded at 11.30pm on 28 September 2019 between Fontwell and Tangmere. Soares was driving a white Seat Leon eastbound at well over 100mph in wet conditions when he lost control. The car left the road and smashed into a tree.
Soares and a passenger in the backseat were seriously hurt and rushed to hospital. Tragically, 23-year-old Weverton Alprandi, also from Bognor Regis, died at the scene.
Judge Slams Soares for Reckless Driving
“This was a very bad case indeed of causing death by dangerous driving. You were going at an excessive speed at the time of the collision and for some considerable distance before. You reached a speed well in excess of 100mph on a dual carriageway in wet conditions, were driving on the wrong side of the road and drove over a hatched area to overtake a line of cars,” said Judge Hetherington.
Soares was handed five years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving, plus three years concurrently for causing serious injury. He also received a 90-month driving ban.
Family and Police Speak Out
Investigating officer Gemma Clarke said: “This case highlights the seriousness of driving dangerously for the road conditions at excess speeds. The consequences of Soares’ actions have been devastating. No sentence will ever reflect the sadness and loss of Weverton’s life. My thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Weverton’s brother paid a heart-breaking tribute: “Weverton was a lovely brother, not only for myself and his sister but for all his friends and family. He was someone that was always there when help was needed. It’s hard to believe you are now gone. Pictures and memories will be the only things left until we meet again in heaven.”
