Carbon Monoxide Scare in Sydenham Flats

Firefighters raced to Sydenham Road at 4:15pm on Monday, July 3, after reports of a suspected carbon monoxide leak in a block of flats above a shop.

Residents Evacuate, Three Hospitalised

Four people from a neighbouring flat had already escaped the building when crews arrived. A man later went to hospital for checks, while a woman and child were rushed in with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fire Brigade Swiftly Tackles Toxic Threat

The London Fire Brigade deployed specialist Gas Detection Units to sweep the premises thoroughly. They identified and dealt with elevated chemical levels, removing all potential hazards before leaving the scene around 7pm.

Warning: Carbon Monoxide Can Kill in Minutes

“Carbon monoxide is a silent, odorless killer,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned. “Always fit carbon monoxide alarms in rooms with fuel-burning appliances and make sure the alarms can be heard throughout your home. Know the signs of poisoning and act fast if you suspect anyone has been affected.”

The crews who tackled the dangerous leak came from Forest Hill, Beckenham, Lewisham, and Bethnal Green fire stations. Thanks to their prompt action, all residents were kept safe.
