Wiltshire Police Boss Vows to Crack Down After Carrick Scandal
Wiltshire Police Chief Constable Kier Pritchard has slammed the shocking crimes of ex-officer David Carrick, who admitted to 24 counts of rape and other sexual offences while serving. He vowed the force will root out misconduct and restore public trust.
Police Trust at Rock Bottom After Horrific Abuse
“Carrick’s vile actions have sparked urgent questions about how women and girls can trust those meant to protect them,” Pritchard said. This comes amid ongoing efforts to rebuild faith following the murder of Sarah Everard by officer Wayne Couzens.
“Policing is now at a tipping point, with the public questioning why we should be trusted to keep them safe.”
“The actions of a wicked minority betray everything policing stands for and damage the hard work of the majority who serve bravely every day.”
Wiltshire Pledges Tough Action on Misconduct
Wiltshire Police currently have 13 gross misconduct investigations running, including four criminal probes. Pritchard promised a zero-tolerance approach. “We will relentlessly pursue anyone who abuses their position of trust. These individuals have no place in policing.”
The force has already acted on 43 HMICFRS recommendations to improve vetting and disciplinary processes, with most changes implemented and clear plans for the rest.
“An independent review of vetting practices is underway, checking all officers, staff and volunteers against national databases,” Pritchard added. “I am absolutely committed to exposing those who undermine public safety.”
