Gun Attack on South Shields Home Leads to Jail for Two Men
Aaron Giles and Kevin Chapman have been locked up after a jury found them guilty of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Shot Fired Through Front Door
The chilling incident happened on September 21, 2022, when a third man fired a shotgun at a house on Brownlow Road. Luckily, nobody was hurt.
Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team (MIT) quickly sprang into action. Using CCTV footage and telecom data, they uncovered the roles played by driver Chapman and passenger Giles.
Proof Caught on Camera
The cops revealed footage showing Chapman driving past the house with Giles in the car shouting the victim’s name. Moments later, an unknown gunman fired twice at the door before fleeing.
Both men denied any involvement, but after a 14-day trial at Newcastle Crown Court, Giles, 29, and Chapman, 40, were convicted of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. They were cleared of conspiracy to murder charges.
Heavy Jail Terms for Dangerous Duo
- Aaron Giles, from Richardson Avenue, South Shields, was sentenced to 15 years.
- Kevin Chapman, of Hawthorne Avenue, South Shields, received 12 years.
Both must serve at least two-thirds of their sentences behind bars.
Police Praise Swift Justice
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins said: “This incident was absolutely appalling, and it was sheer luck that nobody was seriously injured or killed. The brazen attitude of these men throughout the court showed no remorse, but I’m pleased they are now behind bars given the serious threat they pose to our communities.
“While such shootings are rare here, we take them extremely seriously. Our swift investigation right after the shooting led to their conviction and sentencing, thanks to the outstanding work of officers, staff, and CPS colleagues.
“This sort of offending won’t be tolerated. We urge the community to keep sharing information and reporting suspicious behaviour so we can crack down on organised crime as part of Operation Sentinel.”
