Fire Breaks Out in Hotel Room as E-Bike Battery Sparks Alarm
A fire damaged a small section of a second-floor hotel room in a four-to-five-storey building. One man was evacuated before fire crews arrived and taken to hospital. London fire stations, including Shadwell, Old Kent Road, and Islington, attended the blaze.
E-Bike and E-Scooter Charging Fires Soar in 2023
London’s fire brigade has recorded 123 fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters this year alone. Most victims are males in their 20s living in shared homes without children. The most dangerous time? When charging lithium batteries — a hotspot for fires.
“Charging these batteries indoors is risky,” warned the Brigade. “If you must charge inside, keep devices in a smoke-detected area and never block your escape routes.”
Cheap Batteries and DIY Kits Heighten Fire Risks
Conversion kits let riders turn regular bikes into electric ones, but many come without safety-tested batteries. Cheaper off-brand batteries bought online often ignore UK safety rules, increasing the chance of failure and fire.
DIY installations can damage components, making fires more likely. Lithium batteries pack huge energy into tiny spaces. If damaged, crushed, overcharged, or punctured, they can overheat, catch fire, and even explode.
Top Brigade Fire Safety Tips for E-Bike Users
