In a powerful statement, Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, has condemned the recent attacks in Israel, highlighting the harrowing nature of the violence. He revealed that nearly 200 people have been taken hostage, with reports of elderly men, women, children, and even babies being “murdered, mutilated, and burned alive.” The gravity of the situation was evident, as some family members of the missing individuals were present in the public gallery of The House of Commons listening to his statement.
“We call for the immediate release of all hostages,” Sunak declared, emphasising the urgent need for their freedom. Additionally, he confirmed that at least six British citizens have been killed in the attacks, while another ten remain missing. The toll on human lives is deeply distressing, and the British government is committed to providing support and assistance to those affected.
Addressing the British Jewish community directly, Sunak expressed solidarity and support. “We stand with you now and always,” he declared, prompting a chorus of agreement from the House. He described the attacks as an “existential strike” against the idea of Israel as a safe homeland. Sunak assured the community that the government is doing everything possible to protect them. An allocation of £3 million has been made to enhance security measures for Jewish community buildings, and the police will take decisive action against hate crimes and the glorification of terror.
Continuing his address, Sunak turned his attention to British Muslim communities, acknowledging their opposition to the actions of Hamas. He stressed the importance of listening to their concerns with the same attentiveness, pledging support and unity. “Let’s say it plainly. We stand with British Muslim communities too,” he proclaimed, receiving resounding support from the House.
Considering the UK’s response to the situation, Sunak affirmed the government’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself and deter further incursions. However, he emphasised that these actions must be in line with international humanitarian law. Sunak called upon Israel to take all possible precautions to avoid harming civilians, acknowledging the delicate balance between self-defence and protecting innocent lives.
To maintain stability in the region, Sunak disclosed that forces are being reinforced in Cyprus, and aid efforts will be increased. The UK will utilise all available diplomatic tools to prevent further escalation and actively engage with international partners. Sunak revealed his recent meetings with the King of Jordan, King Abdullah, as well as discussions with the leaders of Turkey and Egypt, as they collectively strive to prevent further violence.
In his concluding remarks, Sunak strongly condemned Hamas for their role in the attacks. The Prime Ministers impassioned plea for peace and justice resonated throughout the House of Commons, as the UK reaffirmed its commitment to supporting those affected by the conflict and preventing further bloodshed.
