Cop Caught Snooping on Private Data Gets Suspended Sentence
PC Mohammed Rahman, 39, from the North East Command Unit, has been handed a 12-month prison sentence – suspended for two years – plus 100 hours of community service and 20 days of rehabilitation. The ruling came down at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, 1 December.
Resigned but Misconduct Hearing Looms
Rahman was suspended from duty following his arrest but has now resigned. Despite the criminal case being over, a misconduct hearing is set to follow. Chief Superintendent Simon Crick blasted Rahman’s actions, saying:
“PC Rahman would have been well aware, as all officers are, that police systems must only be used for a legitimate purpose and certainly not to carry out personal checks for his own use.”
He added, “His actions did not meet the high standards we expect and we will now move to a misconduct hearing as soon as possible.”
How Rahman Abused Police Databases
- Arrested in February 2021 and charged in August 2023.
- Investigation by Directorate of Professional Standards Anti-Corruption and Abuse Command.
- Oversight by Independent Office for Police Conduct.
- Rahman carried out multiple unauthorised searches between October 2018 and February 2021.
- Searched Met intelligence, crime databases for family members, known addresses, and car registrations.
- Passed the data on to third parties outside the Met Police.
Guilty Plea Seals His Fate
On Monday, 23 October, PC Rahman admitted seven counts of misconduct in public office. His abuse of power and police systems has now cost him prison time, community service, and a tick for disciplinary action.
