Hit-and-Run Killer Jailed for 11 Years Over New Year Tragedy

On New Year’s Day 2021, Paul Campbell was horrifically killed in a hit-and-run in Earl’s Court, London. Now, 26-year-old Muhammed Gure has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the crash that ended the family man’s life. The Southwark Crown Court handed down the verdict on December 20, 2023.

Disqualified Driver Speeds, Hits Victim, and Flees Scene

Gure, an economics graduate and former NHS Health Care Advisor, was already banned from driving after a drunk-driving conviction just months before. Yet, he got behind the wheel of a black VW Golf borrowed from a friend and was caught speeding at 50mph in a 30mph zone.

The court heard how Gure hit Paul Campbell, flinging him into the air before driving off, leaving him to die on the road. Despite loads of eyewitnesses pointing the finger straight at him, Gure denied driving the car throughout the trial.

Cover-Up Attempt Fails as Friend Also Convicted

Rather than stop to help, Gure made a quick exit. Worse still, he conspired with his friend Haroon Aria, who reported the car stolen to the police and hire company in an effort to hide Gure’s involvement. Aria was later convicted for trying to pervert the course of justice.

Further revelations showed Gure’s reckless streak was no one-off. He had been driving while disqualified and caught speeding days before crashing into Mr Campbell.

Family Mourns Loss as Judge Condemns Killer’s Attitude

Paul’s family bravely spoke out in court, describing their heartbreaking grief. His son, Vinny, shared the devastating impact the tragedy has had, a loss that will never be filled.

“Gure showed no remorse and tried to drag out the case to avoid responsibility,” said Judge Gregory Perrins. “His actions showed utter disrespect for the law and the value of human life.”

This devastating case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of dangerous driving and blatant disregard for the rules of the road.
