Man Jailed for Attempting to Start Fire at Medway Police Station

Edward Midgley, 35, of High Street, Chatham, has been sentenced to three years and six months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to charges of arson endangering life and assaulting an emergency worker. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on the afternoon of 13 November 2023 at Medway Police Station in Gillingham.

Midgley entered the reception area of the police station, located on Purser Way, holding a jar containing fluid. Approaching the counter, he proceeded to pour the liquid over it before using a lighter to ignite a rag soaked in an accelerant. Despite his attempts, the burning rag was extinguished shortly after being thrown onto the counter.

Quick action by a member of the police staff who raised the alarm prevented further escalation of the situation. An officer working nearby attempted to detain Midgley as he was leaving but was assaulted in the process. Despite Midgley’s efforts to escape, he was apprehended and taken into custody.

Following his arrest, Midgley was charged and later pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court. He received his sentence on Friday 12 April 2024.

Detective Constable Emily Speyer, of Medway CID, condemned Midgley’s actions, emphasizing the recklessness of his attempt to start a fire in the police station. She highlighted the potential harm to both police employees and members of the public and denounced his assault on an officer during his attempt to flee.

Midgley’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of such criminal behaviour. It underscores the commitment of law enforcement to ensure the safety and security of both personnel and the public.
