Mother Murdered After Paramedics Leave Son With Mental Health Crisis

A harrowing tragedy struck in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire, where a concerned mum was brutally murdered moments after paramedics refused to take her mentally ill son for treatment.

Paramedics Called But Son Refuses Help

Helen Harrison, 59, called for urgent help over fears about her son Rick Parker’s disturbing behaviour. She hoped he would get a mental health assessment. But when paramedics arrived, Parker refused their help. They judged him to have the ‘capacity’ to say no and left the scene.

Son Attacks and Stabs Mother Dead

Just after paramedics left, Parker launched a savage attack on his mother inside their family home. He strangled Helen, struck her on the head, then fatally stabbed her in the chest with a 20-inch kitchen knife.

A chilling detail: Parker himself later called emergency services, telling the operator it was ‘definitely a body-bag job’. When paramedics returned, they found the knife still embedded in Helen’s shoulder.

Mental Health Struggles and Court Hearing

The court heard Parker had battled mental health issues since a road accident in December 2021. In the weeks before the attack, he’d violently assaulted his stepfather in an unprovoked attack.

Despite being charged with his mother’s murder and assaulting his stepdad, Parker was ruled unfit to stand trial due to his unstable mental state. After a three-day hearing, a jury found he committed the offences.

Tragic Case Highlights Mental Health System Failings

This heart-breaking case exposes the grim reality faced by families caught in mental health crises and the urgent need for better care and support.

Parker is expected to be placed under a hospital order, spotlighting the fragile balance between mental health treatment and criminal justice.
