22 Dogs Seized, 6 Put Down After Appalling Conditions Found
Police swooped on a suspected XL Bully dog farm in Sheffield and seized 22 dogs from shocking, squalid conditions. The distressing haul included mothers and puppies crammed into filthy enclosures. So dire was the situation that six dogs had to be euthanised on welfare grounds.
XL Bully Breed Banned After Rising Attacks
The raid took place on a Sheffield allotment last Thursday. Officers described the scene as “appalling” and expressed grave concern for the animals’ suffering. Chief Inspector Emma Cheney of South Yorkshire Police said, “We do not know how long some of the dogs have been living like this, with female dogs having litters while barely surviving themselves.”
The XL Bully breed was banned nationwide in England and Wales from December 31, 2023, following a spate of violent attacks. These dogs are now illegal under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, with breeding, selling, or abandonment strictly forbidden.
Police Urge Public to Help Stop Animal Cruelty
Chief Inspector Cheney warned animal cruelty would not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. She urged the public to report anyone suspected of illegal breeding or neglect, saying, “We are stronger working with our communities. If you suspect animal cruelty, report it to the RSPCA or police immediately.”
Investigation Ongoing; Rescued Dogs in Police Care
A suspect has been identified but inquiries are ongoing. The 16 surviving dogs remain in police kennels while officers gather evidence. This raid highlights the urgent need to crack down on illegal XL Bully breeding and protect animal welfare laws.
