First-Class Commissioner Angela McLaren to Retire from City of London Police

Commissioner Angela McLaren of the City of London Police is set to retire from her position on medical grounds, announced the police authority on Wednesday.

Angela McLaren, who joined the City of London Police from Police Scotland in 2020 as Assistant Commissioner for Economic Crime and Cyber Crime, was appointed as Commissioner in July 2021. She will officially retire from policing on June 30.

During her tenure, McLaren has been lauded for her exemplary leadership, overseeing a comprehensive policing operation that has maintained the City’s reputation as the safest business district globally. She has also played a pivotal role in combatting economic crime as the National Lead Force for fraud.

Under her guidance, significant strides were made in community policing, with a focus on initiatives to reduce violence against women and girls, enhance diversity and inclusivity within the force, and prioritize victim support.

Tijs Broeke, Chair of the City of London Police Authority Board, praised McLaren’s contributions, describing her as a “first-class commissioner” who has led the force with distinction.

Angela McLaren expressed her pride in the achievements made during her tenure, highlighting the redevelopment of the force’s values and the implementation of a Policing Plan centered on victim advocacy.

Pete O’Doherty, who will serve as Temporary Commissioner in McLaren’s absence, acknowledged her significant and positive leadership, vowing to continue with the force’s ambitious plans.

The City of London Police Authority Board will soon initiate the process to select and appoint the next Commissioner of the force. In the interim, Pete O’Doherty will continue to fulfill the role of Temporary Commissioner.

McLaren extended her gratitude to the officers, police staff, volunteers, and partners she has worked with, expressing appreciation for their support and collaboration.

The Police Authority Board, responsible for supporting the City of London Police in its dual role of ensuring safety within the City streets and leading the national response to fraud and cybercrime, affirmed its commitment to upholding the force’s objectives and initiatives.
