East London Tragedy: 90-Year-Old Dies After Fireworks Set Through Letterbox
A 90-year-old man has died in a shocking blaze triggered by fireworks pushed through his letterbox in Dagenham, East London. The fatal fire on Oval Road North is the latest in a string of blazes hitting the area within 24 hours, leaving the local community shaken.
Three Fires in 24 Hours Stoke Fear in Dagenham
The deadly fire struck at 5:36 PM on July 27, following two other serious fires in the area. The London Fire Brigade battled a major blaze on Third Avenue at 1:33 PM on July 26, which damaged several terraced houses. Just hours later on July 27, a fire broke out on Beam Avenue, attended by four fire engines and around 25 firefighters.
Fire Brigade Vows Support and Thorough Investigation
“Following these three separate fires in just over 24 hours in Dagenham, I’d like to reassure residents that London Fire Brigade will be in the community offering support and advice where needed,” said Assistant Commissioner Thomas Goodall.
He confirmed that investigations, in partnership with the Metropolitan Police, are underway to determine the causes. “At this stage, these fires appear unconnected, but we’re leaving no stone unturned,” he added.
Community on Edge as Fire Risks Escalate
The fatal incident has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, with early reports suggesting reckless use of fireworks sparked the Oval Road blaze. The victim’s identity remains private, but his death highlights the deadly risks of misusing fireworks in residential areas.
Fire crews are now out educating locals on home fire safety and promoting the Brigade’s Home Fire Safety Checker. Goodall confirmed close work with Barking & Dagenham Council is underway to support residents and prevent future tragedies.
Residents have been urged to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviour that could lead to more fires. The London Fire Brigade has ramped up its presence in the area, dedicated to protecting this worried community from further harm.
