A Gravesend RNLI lifeboat crew sprang into action on December 18 after a workman suffered a suspected stroke aboard a workboat near Belvedere. The Gravesend RNLI Atlantic 85 lifeboat launched at 2.23pm following a call from London Coastguard.
Fast and Fierce Response
Four brave crew members—Sid Blake, Karla Thresher, Mel Titmus, and James Curtis—rushed to the scene near Jenningtree Point. Volunteers Mel Titmus and a colleague boarded the workboat to assess the man’s condition, spotting clear signs of a stroke. They administered urgent medical care, stabilising him while monitoring every moment.
Swift Transfer to Ambulance Service
The casualty was carefully handed over to the Ambulance Service near Rainham for immediate hospital treatment. The lifeboat crew stood down at 4pm and swiftly returned to the boathouse, refuelling and ready for the next call by 4.43pm.

This daring rescue marked the 125th launch of the year for Gravesend RNLI—matching their highest ever annual total set back in 2009.
