After a pause over the Christmas period to minimize disruption, Transport for London (TfL) is set to restart essential roadworks on the A40 Westway in the new year. The work will involve repairs to the 50-year-old expansion joints of the elevated roadway, which are critical to its safety and functionality.
Weekend Closures Announced
From Friday, January 3, to Monday, February 17, the eastbound lanes of the Westway will be closed on weekends. The closures will occur from 10 PM on Fridays to 5 PM on Mondays, between the Westway roundabout and the Marylebone flyover.
Signed diversions will direct motorists along alternative routes to minimize inconvenience.
Scope and Schedule of Work
The repairs focus on the expansion joints, which expand and contract with changes in temperature. These joints are crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of the flyover.
The eastbound repairs will last until mid-February, after which similar work on the westbound lanes will take place from February 21 to May 19. However, closures will not be in effect during Bank Holiday weekends on April 18–21, May 2–5, and May 23–26.
Commitment to Communication
TfL has pledged to keep local residents and businesses informed about the schedule and impact of the roadworks.
A TfL spokesperson stated: “This maintenance is essential to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the Westway. We thank the public for their patience as we carry out these vital improvements.”
Impact on Drivers
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel during the weekend closures. Public transport or alternative routes are recommended to avoid delays.
The seven-month project is part of a broader initiative by TfL to maintain and modernize London’s aging transport infrastructure. Further updates will be provided as the work progresses.
