Man Dies After Being Pushed Down Escalator at Waterloo Station

Police are investigating the death of 48-year-old Ian Airlie, who was allegedly pushed down an escalator at Waterloo Station in London. Mr. Airlie was found dead at his home in Greenwich on October 10, 2024, nearly a month after the reported incident.

Incident Details

The alleged altercation occurred on September 15, 2024, at 5:05 PM on a Jubilee Line escalator. According to police, Mr. Airlie claimed he had been pushed into a woman described as of South Asian appearance, causing both of them to fall on the escalator. He sustained a bleeding wound above his left eye.

After the fall, Mr. Airlie reportedly spoke to station security about the incident. He later boarded a bus from North Greenwich Underground Station, where a woman offered him a tissue to stem the bleeding.

Appeal for Witnesses

Detectives are now seeking the woman who assisted Mr. Airlie on the bus, as well as any other witnesses who may have seen the incident. They are particularly interested in identifying anyone who was present at the escalator or who interacted with Mr. Airlie that day.

At the time of the incident, Mr. Airlie was wearing a black T-shirt and light grey jogging bottoms. He carried a turquoise and grey Mountain Warehouse rucksack and a medium-sized black suitcase.

Detective Inspector Chris Rogers said:
“Mr. Airlie’s death is tragic, and his family continue to mourn the loss of a loving son, partner, brother, and uncle. We are determined to piece together the events and provide his family with the answers they deserve. Even the smallest piece of information could be the key to unlocking this investigation.

Ongoing Investigation

A post-mortem examination was inconclusive, and further tests are being conducted to determine the cause of Mr. Airlie’s death. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with details about the incident is encouraged to contact the police or submit information anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
