1980s music legend Paul Young has revealed a horrifying holiday horror story that landed him in intensive care. The star suffered multiple leg fractures and needed three emergency blood transfusions after a nasty fall just days into his Santorini getaway.
Disaster Strikes 24 Hours Into Dream Break
The “Wherever I Lay My Hat” singer was enjoying his break at the luxury De Sol Hotel and Spa when tragedy struck. Just one day into the holiday, Paul slipped and plunged down a flight of outdoor steps. The rain-slicked steps had no handrail, and Paul’s fall left him with serious injuries.
“It had been spitting with rain… when I got to the top of the steps, as soon as I put my foot on the first step, my leg slipped out from underneath me. I fell and my leg cracked as soon as I hit the step. Once I’d gone down, I couldn’t stop. There was no handrail, so nothing to hold on to. I just thought, ‘I’ve lost control’,” Paul told the Daily Mirror.
Nine Hours of Torture in a Greek Hospital
The fall shattered his left femur, the largest bone in the body, dangerously close to the hip joint. In agony, Paul was rushed to Santorini’s General Hospital, where medical staff were stretched thin. He spent nine agonising hours on a corridor gurney, barely eased by paracetamol.
“I was screaming out all the time… most of the time I had my eyes shut because the pain was terrible,” he recalled.
Due to limited surgery options on the island, Paul was airlifted to Athens. There, doctors inserted a metal rod to stabilise his shattered femur. The fractures were so severe, they warned his leg could have snapped completely.
Blood Loss, Delirium and a Hard Fight
The operation was just the start of the nightmare. Paul lost a critical amount of blood and required three transfusions. Struggling to understand Greek-speaking staff, he felt scared and confused.
“For the first few days, there was so much blood loss, they were changing the sheets every day… I didn’t know what they were saying. It was a frightening time,” he said.
After two weeks in Greece, Paul returned to the UK to continue his recovery at London’s Cleveland Clinic.
Setback and Comeback: Still Fighting Fit
Just as his recovery was picking up, disaster struck again. In November, a bolt in the metal rod snapped, forcing Paul back under the knife for a brutal 10-hour surgery.
“I’d just started to feel like I was getting better… then I woke up one morning in agony. I thought, ‘Why aren’t the painkillers working?’”
Now, Paul is back on his feet and determined to make a full comeback. Fans have flooded social media with support for the resilient star, whose timeless music continues to inspire a new generation.
