Car Crashes rolls and Catches Fire on Eastern Way, Thamesmead

A serious crash on Eastern Way in Thamesmead this afternoon has left a vehicle engulfed in flames and a stretch of roadside vegetation scorched, prompting a major emergency response.

The London Fire Brigade was called to the scene at 1:43 PM today (April 11) after a car collided with street furniture and burst into flames. The blaze quickly spread, igniting approximately 20 metres of nearby grass and trees.

Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters attended the incident and managed to bring the fire under control by 2:41 PM.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:

“Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to a fire on Eastern Way in Erith.
A car collided with street furniture and caught alight. Around 20 metres of undergrowth was also alight.
The Brigade was called at 13:43 and the incident was over for firefighters by 14:41.”

Emergency crews from the London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police were also reported at the scene. The current condition of the driver or any passengers is unknown, and no arrests have been confirmed at this stage.

The incident forced the closure of a stretch of Eastern Way, between the A2041 Harrow Manor Way and Yarnton Way. Drivers were urged to avoid the area while emergency services worked to make the scene safe.

The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for further information.
