Massive Blaze Erupts in Coulsdon After Gas Cylinder Explosion
A major fire tore through the back of a home on Marlpit Lane, Coulsdon, this evening. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) scrambled to the scene after several frantic 999 calls reporting flames and a suspected gas cylinder blast.
Firefighters Battle Huge Flames, Police Step In
Four fire engines raced to tackle the inferno. A 25-metre safety cordon was swiftly set up after reports of the explosion. Specialist teams from Dowgate Fire Station were called to investigate the blaze and rule out foul play.
“Due to reports of an explosion and the presence of gas cylinders, our crews responded with urgency and extreme caution,” a fire brigade source said. “Specialist units are now working to determine exactly what happened.”
Meanwhile, officers from the Metropolitan Police assisted with cordon control and public safety as the investigation gets underway.
Road Closures Cause Travel Chaos
Marlpit Lane is blocked both ways at the junction with Coulsdon Rise. This has caused delays to local traffic and public transport. As of 7:30pm, TfL bus routes 404 and 466 have been rerouted:
- Route 466 Northbound: Diverted via Coulsdon Road, Placehouse Lane, Mead Way, Chaldon Way, then back to Marlpit Lane.
- Route 466 Southbound: Rerouted along Marlpit Lane, Chaldon Way, Mead Way, Tolers Lane, The Crossways, returning to Coulsdon Road.
Residents Urged to Avoid Area
Authorities warn locals to steer clear of Marlpit Lane and follow diversion signs. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far. The LFB and Met Police are continuing their probe into the cause of the fire.
