Five Hurt in Suspected Arson at Ilford Indian Restaurant

A devastating fire ripped through Indian Aroma in Gants Hill, leaving five people hospitalised—three are fighting for their lives.

Blaze Breaks Out at Indian Aroma

The fire broke out around 9pm on Friday, 22 August, at the popular Woodford Avenue eatery. The London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police, and Ambulance Service raced to the scene after seven emergency calls flooded in.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus rushed inside and rescued five victims suffering burns and smoke inhalation. Two were rushed to a major trauma centre, while three were taken to local hospitals. Another nine people managed to escape before crews arrived.

Police Launch Major Investigation

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers of the Met’s Central Specialist Crime North unit warned the community to stay alert. He said:

“We understand this incident will cause concern within the community. My team of specialist detectives are working at speed to piece the incident together. Locals can expect to see a large police presence in the area. If you have any concerns, please speak to those officers on the ground.”

The fire, which damaged part of the restaurant’s ground floor, was brought under control by 10.32pm. Crews from Ilford, Hainault, Leytonstone, and Woodford stations fought the blaze.

No Arrests Yet as Inquiry Continues

The fire is being treated as suspicious and investigations are ongoing. So far, no arrests have been made.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

“We treated five people for burns and smoke inhalation. We took two patients to a major trauma centre and three others to local hospitals.”
